They're Doing to America What They Performed to Christianity

Trumpism's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions of the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.

He has done things ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties from his cuts to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and growing, and this week an analysis projected his energy policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing significant portions of the White House in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with public institutions.

We went from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' toward 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into a figure of hostility who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and because the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or nones. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the story of a mighty king arising; rather, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to escape covert authorities. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for other people, particularly for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the other cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your coat you should give him your sweater too.

The obvious and direct fact that the Savior from scripture advocates for a kind of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith rather a controversial faith: appealing to the populace, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Best Among Us

Hence I have become encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided substantial consolation to participate in developing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the best parts in US history.

We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?

The nation is most protected, essentially, by relationship to the finest within national tradition, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, specifically the model of Christ. In both situations does it suggest feigning the most damaging about the nation and Christian faith was nonexistent; it signifies both meekness and faith, a mixture that genuine American Christians should embrace.
